A compressor blade 7.5 centimetres long, stocky and heavy for its size — and the only one from this find whose root is marked: «40A020S A B», below it «75G».

What the root tells you

The root has two parallel rails. The blade was slid into a circumferential groove in the compressor disc and held there by shape alone — at tens of thousands of revolutions centrifugal force pulls on it with many times its own weight. That is why the root is more substantial than the aerofoil itself.

The stamping

«40A020S A B» is a part number; «75G» in all likelihood denotes the moment weight — the figure by which the blades of one row are distributed so the disc stays in balance. Every blade is weighed and classed, otherwise the rotor runs out of true. This cannot be proven; the part number alone leads nowhere without the maker's records.

Provenance — honestly

Which engine this came from is not known. There are no papers with it, and apart from its shape nothing identifies the type. The material cannot be named without testing either: compressor blades use titanium, steel or a nickel alloy depending on the stage. What is certain is in the key facts — the rest stays open.
