look through, do not shoot · base «Made in Germany · US-Zone»
Item no. 060-678-000
A miniature camera in metal and white plastic, under five centimetres wide — which does not take pictures: you hold it to the light, look through the finder, and nude photographs appear. The base is stamped «Made in Germany · US-Zone».
A peep viewer in the shape of a camera — sold as a «spy camera» or simply as a souvenir. Inside sits a film strip behind a lens; the knob on the side advances it. They were sold at kiosks, in gift shops and through mail-order advertisements, with views of Paris, Naples — or, as here, with nudes. It is a pocket joke of its era: outwardly a camera you can show anyone, inwardly something you did not leave lying about at the time.
«US-Zone» is not advertising but a mandatory origin mark. Between 1945 and 1949 Germany was divided into four occupation zones, and anyone exporting from the American zone had to say so on the goods. With the founding of the Federal Republic in 1949 the marking disappeared. That pins manufacture to those four years — unusually precise for an object without papers.
Used, well preserved for its age. The metal is matt with fine scratches, the white plastic slightly yellowed — both normal after eight decades. The lens is clear, the film strip complete, the knob advances. The stamping on the base is legible.
