Description

A cigarette holder shaped as a globe on a turned brass foot: the sphere carries the graticule and the continents, the opening for the cigarettes sits on top.

The making

Brass, turned and assembled, with grown patina. The foot is heavy enough that nothing tips. Table sets like this belonged on the smoking table of the fifties and sixties — globe, rocket or world sphere as the motif, often paired with an ashtray and a lighter.

Today

Anyone who does not smoke puts pens in it, or leaves it as what it is: a piece of table culture from a time when people smoked in the living room.
