green bird · blow hole underneath · blue cord
Item no. 050-647-000
A small ceramic bird whistle, hand-painted in green and pink, on a blue cord: the blow hole sits underneath — this thing really whistles.
Not a pendant to look at but a miniature instrument. The body is hollow, with a rectangular opening and a cutting edge underneath where the airflow breaks — the same principle as a recorder. Clay whistles in animal shapes belong to the market-stall repertoire in Latin America, the Balkans and Asia; they are pressed from a mould, fired and then painted by hand.
Head and beak are picked out in white, the eye drawn with a black ring, the wing laid in as a fan of pink and black strokes. The painting sits directly on the glaze and is not printed — you can see the brushwork at the transitions. Origin and workshop are not marked.
Good. The ceramic is free of cracks and chips, the painting complete and fresh. The blow hole is clear. The cord is supple and the knot runs. Rinse and dry it before the first blow.
