Description

A bellied brown ceramic jug with a tiki face cut into its body — eyes, nose and mouth as deep notches. A cork stopper sits on top, and the neck is narrow.

What such a vessel was for

Narrow neck, tight cork, no spout: this is a storage vessel, not a pouring jug. In tiki bars bottles like this held rum or syrup behind the counter; the roughly cut faces come from the same visual language as the mugs but are kept much plainer. The glaze runs unevenly — deliberately, it is meant to look like earth and fire.
