Description

Squatting tiki figure in dark hardwood. Hands on the belly, legs drawn up, the face showing the classic features: broad nose, mouth with a straight row of teeth, concentric eyes. Above it a tall, serrated headdress taking up almost half the figure's height.

Placing it

The posture — squatting, hands on the belly — is found across the Polynesian world, from New Zealand to Hawaii. This piece is hand-carved, finished all round and carries no workshop mark; age and place of origin cannot be established from it.
