Description

A «Ti-Ti Tree of Hawaii»: a small tree with white blossoms on a red base, together with its original box showing a hula dancer and palms in fifties printing.

The story behind it

The ti plant (Cordyline fruticosa) counts in Hawaii as a plant of luck and protection; its leaves are woven into skirts and planted around houses. As a souvenir it became a miniature tree in a little box you could carry home in a suitcase — along with the story, supplied on the packaging.

About the box

The box is what makes this piece. The artwork — a dancer in a yellow skirt, the lettering in flowing type — is exactly the visual language that later became the whole tiki aesthetic. Without the box it would be an artificial sprig; with it, a document of its time.
