Description

Before Sven Kirsten, Tiki was a misunderstanding: either Polynesian ethnography or cocktail kitsch. In 2000 The Book of Tiki showed that it is a chapter of American history in its own right — architecture, restaurants, carving and advertising graphics of the fifties and sixties, born of the longing of men returning from the Pacific war.

Why this edition

This is the first hardcover edition of 2000, ISBN 3-8228-6417-X, not one of the later paperback reprints. It is the one people look for.

What is inside

Photographs of vanished Tiki bars, floor plans, menus, matchbooks, carvings, and the names of the people who made them — Kirsten gathered the sources before the buildings were pulled down.

Condition

Used, clean, block tight. Boards without knocks.
