Description

A chromed Swissair ashtray with an aircraft model mounted on it — by its shape a DC-8 or Convair Coronado.

What it was

Ashtrays like this stood in travel agencies and management offices in the sixties and were given to good customers. That an ashtray could pass as an airline's promotional gift says a lot about the era. Until the grounding of 2001 Swissair was a piece of how Switzerland saw itself. What is left of it is collected today by people who still remember the cross on the tail — prices for good material have been rising for years.
