Hand-forged · over a metre · metal throughout
Item no. 090-283-000
Hand-forged spear, entirely of iron: a slim leaf blade with a central ridge, the shaft twisted along its whole length — the torsion is clearly visible in the forged metal. It tapers to a point at the lower end.
The twisted shaft is typical of African smithing as practised in the Sahel and East Africa — as a weapon, a status object and later for trade. Without collection documents neither age nor region can be fixed; the forged character, though, is unmistakable — this is not a casting.
Age marks, surface rust, grown patina. Not polished — deliberately left as found.
