Description

A shallow bowl in dark wood, its rim framed by a mosaic band of light and dark wood running all the way round. The centre is recessed, the underside blackened.

How it is made

The band is not printed decoration but inlay: individual slips of wood in alternating tones, laid into a groove and sanded flush. The technique — glued rods cut across — is the same that links Japanese yosegi work with Middle Eastern inlay; where this bowl comes from is not marked.

Condition

Good. The mosaic band is complete, no piece missing or standing proud. The surface shows fine use marks, the rim slight rubbing in one place. Sits flat.
