Description

A concertina album from Naples, the kind travellers took home around 1900: 32 views, pasted together into one long strip that pulls out across a table. The cover is embossed in colour — Vesuvius smoking above the bay, framed by lemon branches, with «32 VEDUTE» above and «RICORDO DI NAPOLI» below.

The views

Harbour and gulf, the cathedral interior, streets, the excavations, Vesuvius from several directions. The plates are printed in black-and-white photogravure and each carries a caption.

Condition

All plates present, the folds hold, the strip pulls out completely. The embossed cover keeps its strong colours, rubbed along the edges; the red back board has faded a little lighter. Paper toned with age, no tears, nothing missing.
