Description

A penguin in dark wood in strongly reduced form, upright, mounted on a pale wooden base. Only the necessary lines: the beak as a wedge, the wings as flat planes laid against the body.

On the design

This is not a faithful copy but a search for a form: the body is brought down to a cone, the wings lie flat against it, the head sits on without any neck. That kind of simplification is familiar from the small sculpture of the fifties and sixties, when animal figures were reduced to their silhouette.

On the wood

Body and base are both wood — the body stained dark, the base left pale. The contrast is intended and carries the piece: the dark one stands, the pale one holds. The surface is smoothed; in raking light the grain shows through the stain.
