Description

A moai head carved out of a flat wooden board 28 centimetres long: the long ears, the heavy brow, the narrow chin — the features of the Easter Island statues, translated into relief.

The work

The face is cut proud at the front while the back was left smooth, showing the natural grain. The board is two planks glued together, the joint running visibly through. Reliefs like this lean against a wall or hang — they need no base and take up almost no depth.

Condition

Good. The carving is crisp, nothing broken out. The glue joint is tight. The wood shows handling and storage marks, with a shallow dent on one edge. No hanger fitted.
