A giraffe in extremely elongated form: the neck takes up more than half the figure, the legs are reduced to thin rods.

Why it stands out

The giraffe is the boldest figure in the holding: four rod-thin legs carry a body from which an even thinner neck rises. In casting that is borderline — too thin and the metal solidifies before the mould is filled. That it has come through decades undamaged suggests it mostly stood and rarely travelled.

About the material

The surface is brass and has gone lighter on the raised areas — that is how metal behaves when it is handled over years. Whether brass, bronze or brass-plated casting cannot be decided without testing; the weight suggests a solid cast.
