Description

A carved wooden crane: long neck rising steeply, beak thrust forward, the body on two slender legs above a carved base. An incised feather pattern runs across the wing.

The making

Cut by hand from dark hardwood, the surface sanded smooth and darkened — the grain runs visibly through neck and body. The base is roughly notched, a deliberate contrast to the smooth figure.

Where such birds come from

Slender wooden birds of this kind were interior decor from the fifties on — partly Scandinavian, partly imported from Southeast Asia. What they share is strong simplification: few lines, a clear silhouette, no detail too many.
