What a privy mark is

A small extra punch that sets a part of the mintage apart from the rest of the year. It is precisely these part-mintages that collectors chase — the same coin without the mark is markedly cheaper. The Perth Mint’s Kookaburra series has run since 1990 with a new design each year. Mintages are limited per year, and older dates trade above pure silver value — particularly in the two-ounce size, of which the fewest were struck.
