Description

Heated pitot tube Kollsman type G-2 from World War II — engraved «TUBE, AIR SPEED … PROPERTY — AIR FORCES». It measured the slipstream of the US Army Air Forces.

What does it do?

The pitot tube sits in the slipstream: from its ram pressure the airspeed indicator computes the speed. The 24-volt heater prevents icing in clouds — otherwise the airspeed indicator talks nonsense.
