Description

A black-lacquered box with a large gold character on the lid, holding ten round coasters in strong orange, each with a stylised white crane in flight. The backs are left pale.

The motif

In Japan the crane stands for long life and is among the most common symbols of good fortune — on a set of coasters, a wish directed at the guest. Sets like this were made in quantity for export from the fifties on and have become scarce complete with their box.
