Shunga — the erotic woodblock art of Japan — was for centuries the country's most technically demanding printed matter, and for decades unshowable in Europe. This Thames & Hudson volume brings it in large format and in colour, with the masters from Moronobu to Utamaro and Hokusai.

Why the book is sought after

Because it shows the sheets large. Shunga lives on detail — on the fabric patterns, on the calligraphy inside the picture, on the way the printer laid one colour over another. Small reproductions lose exactly that. Thames & Hudson gave the sheets the format they need.
