A hula bobbler for the dashboard, about 12 centimetres tall, unopened in its original box with palm artwork and a sunset.

Where it comes from

After the war, servicemen returning from the Pacific brought hula figures home, and by the fifties one stood on every second American dashboard. The hips sit on a spring — every bump in the road becomes choreography. The back of the box explains what hula actually is: a dance that tells stories, handed down from teacher to student.

About the packaging

The box is sealed and shows the figure through its window. That is rare for dashboard figures — they were bought to go straight into the car. Leave it closed and you have a shelf piece; open it and you have a car in a better mood.
