The real car

The Hudson Hornet took three NASCAR titles in a row in the early fifties. The secret was the «step-down» design: the floor sat between the frame rails rather than on top of them, which put the centre of gravity lower than any rival's. With a straight six Hudson beat the V8s of the Big Three — until the competition caught up on sheer power. For a while Tim Flock raced with a rhesus monkey called Jocko Flocko riding along — until it got at the pedals mid-race.
