Description

A slender female figure carved from a single piece of tropical hardwood, head tilted to one side, hair carried over the shoulder as a closed mass. The base flows into stylised foliage from which the figure seems to grow.

The making

Not a production piece: the transitions are hand-sanded, the surface silky, the wood showing its dark grain openly. The style — elongated proportions, closed forms, ornamental base — points to the carving that was made for export in Bali and Java from the fifties on. No documentation of workshop or date survives.
