Description

An elephant in pale wood, carved and worked all round: the trunk lowered, the ears laid back, the tusks set in individually.

On the work

The body is carved from one piece, the legs cut free so that the figure stands on four points rather than on a block. The tusks sit in drilled holes — in carvings of this kind they are always set in separately, because carved from the solid they would be too thin and too easily broken. The surface is smoothed and lightly polished, the grain running lengthwise through the body.

On the origin

Not documented: no signature, no label, no date. Elephants like this were traded for decades as travel souvenirs from Africa and South Asia, usually in sets of decreasing size. What holds true for this one is in the key facts — I claim nothing beyond that.
