Description

An elephant in dark hardwood with a raised trunk and inset tusks — noticeably heavier and darker than its pale counterpart.

On the raised trunk

The pose is not accidental: across much of Asia and in the western decorating tradition the upward-curving trunk counts as a sign of luck, while the lowered one stands for calm. Whether the carvers meant it that way or whether the trade invented it cannot be said — but that is how it was sold.

On the work

The wood is dense and dark, the surface polished so that the grain lights up. The trunk is cut free and rounded along its whole length — the most delicate part of a figure like this, here without break or crack. The tusks sit in drilled holes.
