Description

A Japanese tea cup — a yunomi — with «The Great Wave off Kanagawa» after Hokusai: the wave runs all the way round, Mount Fuji in the background, together with the title cartouche in Japanese script.

On the motif

Katsushika Hokusai made the colour woodblock print around 1830 as the first sheet of the series «Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji». Today it is the best-known Japanese picture there is — and one of the few you recognise at once, even from a fragment. On a round cup that has an advantage: the wave does not break off, it runs back into itself.

On the make

The print is fired in and runs around the full circumference, in blues and greys on a pale ground. The shape is the classic tall, handleless one — you close your hand around it and it holds the heat. Fully glazed inside.
