Description

The Art Nouveau cloth-bound volume of Edvard Grieg's «Lyric Pieces», published by C. F. Peters in Leipzig — and the real showpiece of this library.

What makes it special

The binding is blind-stamped Art Nouveau, the title page an engraved allegory in red. Inside the cover is the dealer's stamp of Anton Göll, Vienna I, Wollzeile 5. Bound in at the front is a portrait photograph of Grieg with a facsimile signature — and then comes what makes this volume unique: a previous owner pasted in their own photographs from Troldhaugen and captioned them by hand, «Edvard Grieg's composer's hut at Troldhaugen 1980» and «View from Grieg's house at Troldhaugen».

Why it matters

Someone travelled to Grieg's house on the Nordåsvatnet, took photographs, and pasted them into exactly the music that was written there. There is no second volume like it.
