Description

A glass float in a knotted net, amber-coloured and slightly irregularly blown — the classic fisherman's buoy that held nets at the surface.

Where the form comes from

Before plastic, every drift net carried glass floats; in Japan and Norway they were blown by the million. The net of tarred twine held the ball and tied it to the gear — and that is exactly what hangs it in a window today. At the pole you can see the glassmaker's pontil scar, where the ball was parted from the pipe. Whether this piece was ever in the water or made as decoration cannot be said.

Condition

Good. The glass is uncracked, the net complete and sound, the loop firm. Fine scratches and cloudiness in the glass — welcome, they soften the tone.
