hinged lid · novel cover by J. Hunter Holly · metal
Item no. 050-679-000
A flat metal case with a hinged lid carrying the cover art of the science-fiction novel «The Flying Eyes» by J. Hunter Holly: a giant eye above a fleeing crowd, in the colours of the early sixties.
«The Flying Eyes» appeared in 1962 as a paperback — flying eyes that put people into a trance. It is pulp in its purest form: one idea, one lurid cover, a hundred and fifty pages. Covers like this shaped the visual language that kustom culture later drew on. On a case in your jacket pocket it comes into its own better than on a yellowed spine.
The body is metal, the image applied flat and sealed under a clear coat. The lid swings on a full-length hinge and snaps shut; inside, the case is divided. Made for cigarettes, but just as usable for cards, pencils or whatever else is flat.
Used. The image is complete and fresh in colour, with fine scratches in the top coat. The edges are rubbed bright at the corners — pocket wear. The hinge runs without play and the lid closes cleanly.
