Description

Japanese rice bowls with a dark rim and pale interior, hand-painted: a Daruma with a stern gaze in the well, surrounded by calligraphy, more characters in strong black and red on the outside.

What a Daruma is

The round armless, legless figure represents Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen. It is a tumbler doll: knocked over, it rights itself. With it goes the saying nanakorobi yaoki — «fall down seven times, get up eight». That is exactly the message given in Japan at New Year or at the start of an undertaking.
