Where the collection comes from

The stories come from the Persian, Arab and Indian world and were passed on for centuries before being printed in Europe from the 18th century onwards. The frame — Scheherazade telling stories for her life — holds together material reaching from Sindbad to Aladdin, which has migrated into countless later works.
