What a fuel altered is

An altered is a dragster with a heavily shortened wheelbase and the engine set far back — a layout that works on paper and barely goes straight in practice. Fuelled with nitromethane («fuel») these became the cars that brought the crowd to its feet: short, light, over the limit. The class produced names like «Pure Hell» and «Winged Express».
