Dave Stevens (1955–2008) created in The Rocketeer a character built out of 1930s pulp and turned into a cult in the 1980s. Brush with Passion is the big career monograph: drawings, covers, pin-ups, sketches, and Stevens' own account of it all, recorded shortly before his death.
The arc runs from early storyboard craft through the Rocketeer pages to the Bettie Page studies with which Stevens brought the fifties icon back into public view. Along with them: studio notes, preliminary drawings and reproductions that show the road from pencil to finished plate.
The book was published by Underwood Books, Nevada City and has been out of print for years. When we looked, there were two offers worldwide, £307 and £978. With only two data points a median is a fantasy figure — so we work from the lower one.
Clean and tight. Dark blue cloth boards with gilt spine title, block square, no markings. Used, but with no knocks to the corners.
