A pendant in the form of the hei matau, the stylised Māori fish hook, cut from pale bone and worn on a black cord.

What the form means

In New Zealand culture the hei matau stands for prosperity, strength and safe return across water — it was given to travellers. The sweeping shape goes back to the hook with which, in the tradition, the demigod Māui pulled the North Island from the sea. As jewellery it is widespread today, in bone, jade and antler.
